Mrs.
Arra Constable Woodward was honored on her 91st birthday at the B.P.W. monthly
birthday party in the sunroom of the community hospital.
Mrs.
Woodward was born Feb. 6, 1870 at Cainsville, Mo. in a log cabin with a huge
fireplace which held a 6 foot heavy green back-log, which would burn for several
days. She was the 7th of 11 children. She recalls how they baked their bread in
a large heavy iron skillet with a heavy lid which would be buried in the hot
coals. She met Ed Woodward at a Cain school party and a year later they were
married by Mr. Woodward's grandfather, Hon, who was Baptist missionary. They
farmed in Missouri; in Kansas they owned the Bar-Cross Hereford Cattle Ranch;
later they operated a flour mill in Galva, Kansas; entered real estate business
in Iowa; finally settling on a farm 3 miles north of Snyder, when again Mr.
Woodward entered real estate business in Brush.
Among
the interesting and exciting activities of this couple were racing their own
horses, the favorites being "Chad", "Wing-Around" and
"Cap" —they also purchased ponies from Utah Indians and after
harness-breaking they were sold as buggy ponies to the younger set in Missouri.
She recalls building of the Rock Island R. R. through their land in Kansas and
how the railroad crews watered their horses and mules at their tanks; when 8 to
10 railroad tramps each day knocked on their door for food.
The
Woodwards had 8 children: Ona, Clayton, Pauline, Russell, Paul, Wava and Requita.
Mrs. Woodward has 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Those present at
the party were: Mrs. Pauline Woodward Long, Dr. and Mrs. Lusby and Mr. and Mrs.
Russell Woodward, Dr. Paul Woodward was out of town and unable to attend.
Maudi
Robertson entertained the group with saxophone solos, accompanied on the piano
by her husband, "Cookie"; Ruth Graves led the group singing of
favorite ballads and hymns. The Tauten pre-school children presented "We
Count and Shake Your Hands" by Cindy Hurkett and Kim Boone, and "All I
Want Is a Lollypop" by Debby Schauermann and Terry Tomlinson, Pink Ladies
who assisted were: Mrs. J. C. Howell and Mrs. Chris Wagner; Nurses assisting
